A Green and Prosperous Outaouais

Together, we can build a better future!

Extreme flooding and forest fires in our community highlight our vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change. Faced with these challenges, Sophie’s “For a Green and Prosperous Outaouais” initiative aims to unite local efforts for an eco-responsible and economically viable transition. By mobilizing elected officials, the community, and experts to develop an integrated strategy, this initiative aims to make the green recovery a reality and achieve net zero by 2050. By working together, we aspire to transform our region into a model of sustainable prosperity, reflecting the resilience and ingenuity of our communities.

Protecting Gatineau Park for Future Generations

Did you know that Gatineau Park has no legal status?

From the moment I was elected as Member of Parliament for Pontiac – Kitigan Zibi, I have been committed to making Gatineau Park a true park! This natural treasure, with its exceptional biodiversity, must be preserved for ourselves and for our children.

This summer, I had the honor of working with Senator Rosa Galvez to draft a bill aimed at protecting Gatineau Park. We need to establish clear official boundaries and preserve our park for the Canadian people, dedicated to their benefit, education, and enjoyment. The park’s ecological integrity will be safeguarded, and it will be maintained and used in a way that ensures it remains intact for future generations.

I invite you to review the key clauses of our bill and share your feedback (sophie.chatel@parl.gc.ca). This is a unique opportunity to help shape this legislation—your voice matters.

Green Book

From Global to Local and from Local to Global in the Outaouais (coming fall 2024)

The guide proposes an approach for elected officials to encourage them to adopt an approach similar to that of my ” For a Green and Prosperous Outaouais” initiative in their own regions, thereby contributing to the improvement of our magnificent country. Guiding principles include linking global policies with local implementation, mobilizing stakeholders and pooling our resources and efforts. As a Member of Parliament, it’s crucial to exert a positive influence and keep a close eye on community action. We are an integral part of the solutions and have the power to act in concrete ways to bring about meaningful projects, both locally and globally, both for ourselves and for those we represent.

Our Biodiversity Project

Regional Biodiversity Protection and Collaboration Initiative led by Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (KZA)

In preparation for COP15 in Montreal, the Outaouais region organized a regional COP15 in November 2022, giving rise to an innovative project led by the Anishinabe community of Kitigan Zibi in partnership with various partners. The main objective is to establish a regional roadmap to achieve the COP15 biodiversity targets, building local capacity, fostering collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners, and ensuring adequate political and financial support. Mobilizing elected officials, civil servants, Indigenous communities, environmental organizations, industries and citizens, the project promotes collaboration in conservation, strengthening Kitigan Zibi’s leadership, with deliverables including community engagement, a regional portrait of species and natural spaces, and a roadmap for action. Sophie’s role includes seeking funding, communicating with ministers to gain their support for the project, intermediating with elected officials, networking to mobilize local stakeholders, and promoting the project to unite the community around this regional initiative.
